Mrs. Mertie M. Smith Sutton, 66, grandmother of Journal-Review Sports Editor Rex Kirts, died at 8:20 a.m. Thursday morning at the Ross Annex in Lafayette. She had been a patient at the nursing home since Feb. 19 and ill for the past two years. Mrs. Sutton was the wife of Rex J. Sutton, owner of the Sutton Construction Co. of Lafayette. She had lived in the Lafayette area for 45 years. Born at Wallace on Jan. 23, 1899, she was the daughter of Sylvester and Cora Renick Smith. She was reared in the Attica area and from there moved to Lafayette. She was married to Rex Sutton in Washington, D.C., in 1935. She was a member of the Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church. She was also a member of the Hope Chapter 5, Order of Eastern Star, in Lafayette and the Order of White Shrine in Lafayette. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority in Lafayette. Survivors include the husband; three children by a previous marriage, Mrs. J. P. Cooper of San Diego, Calif., John Kirts and Morris Kirts, both of Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Mattie Moore of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Richard J. Smith of Lafayette; five grandchildren, and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hippensteel Funeral Chapel in Lafayette. Rev. Earl Heimburger and Rev. Kenneth L. Kraft will officiate. Burial will be in the West Haven Cemetery in Lafayette. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Friday.   --typed by Walt W
